14 SUSTAINABILITY I PAPER MILLS In terms of energy consumption our factory in Brunnenthal is well below the industry average says Jürgen Schaller Managing Partner of Carl Macher Conserv ing resources is a matter of course for us so the plant has a two stage plant In recent years a double digit million amount has been invested in the modernisation of the fully biological waste water treatment plant Since the volume of water extracted is discharged back into the Saale at almost the same point after purification the actual consumption is only around 1 m3 t of paper Only a part of this small amount remains in the produced core board itself because the consumption also includes the water that is lost through evaporation and is returned to the water cycle in a natural process The low water consumption also takes into account the climatic water balance which Carl Macher pays attention to with an eye to the future HIGH INVESTMENT FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE After being used in the processes 400 000 m3 of waste water are treated in the plant using state of the art technology The mill s own waste water treatment plant which is sized to serve the equivalent of 100 000 residential customers also purifies the waste water of the neighbouring communities The waste water treatment plant operates with a combination of anaerobic and aerobic tech nology It is adapted to the specific circum stances of the paper mill and precisely and reliably adheres to the specified limit values Municipal plants often cannot guarantee such complete purification of the water At Carl Macher the purified water even has better indicator values than before extraction with less nitrate content in the water after use and treatment
